This product is a replacement for NoloBait(tm) this year. The NoloBait(tm) production facility burned down late last year and they are still rebuilding at this time.
Semaspore Bait is OMRI listed organic grasshopper/lubber bait that works by infecting grasshoppers with a bacteria that makes them stop eating, they become lethargic and a target for the other grasshoppers to feed upon, becoming infected themselves. It works the same as NoloBait, for which we have an FAQ: shellsfeed.com/nolo-bait-faq/ More information can be found below.
How it Works:
Semaspore Bait contains Nosema locustae, a naturally occurring single celled protozoan infects all stages of developing grasshoppers, mole crickets, Mormon and black field crickets. Nosema, when ingested, creates a disease that is specific to these pests. It will not harm any other living species.
Grasshoppers typically lay eggs in Southern exposure locations in hilly, sandy soil. As they hatch they will begin to travel to their food source (your garden or farm). Apply Nosema in swaths as a barrier about 1 foot wide to head them off, or by generally broadcasting product in and around area to be protected. Grasshoppers will begin to feed on spore-infected bran.
After eating Semaspore grasshoppers become sick, eat less, and begin to die. The disease spreads to healthy grasshoppers through cannibalism. In 2-4 weeks, 50% of the population will die, and most survivors will be infected to continue spreading the disease. Infected survivors eat 75% less than healthy grasshoppers and lay fewer eggs. Nosema works best when applied to younger stages of hoppers (1/4 to 1/2-inch long). Heavy infestations may require repeat applications.
Use by expiration date. If refrigerated add 30 days to expiration date; if frozen add 90 days.
Semaspore Bait is most effective when introduced to the grasshopper population early in the season when large numbers of nymphs are present. Nosema locustae continually grows within infected hosts and is most effective when pests are infected before reaching adulthood.
